Holistic Foods for Dogs

One of the most important aspects of taking care of your dog’s diet is to choose the right kind of dog food for him/her.

There are several types of dog foods available in the market and choosing the right kind for your pet starts with evaluating his/her needs. Take your dog to the veterinarian to assess his/her specific health needs. Based on this, you can choose from a whole range of dog foods designed to fit the individual pet’s health requirements.

Many owners switch to natural, organic or holistic dog foods and sometimes even prepare their own natural dog food at home. Before making the switch to a new kind of dog food, consult your veterinarian about its suitability for your dog. In addition, make sure that your dog’s shift to a holistic dog food diet is a gradual one.

This is to ensure that your pet’s digestive system will not revolt against the new diet. Your puppy may have a sensitive stomach and may thus need to make a slow change to a new holistic dog food diet. Therefore, ensure that you give him/her small amounts of holistic puppy food mixed with his earlier diet and then gradually increase the intake. A week is an ideal amount of time for your dog to adjust to a holistic dog food diet. During the week, start by serving your dog about one quarter of new holistic dog food and three quarters of the earlier diet. You can serve this mix for the first two days and then slowly increase it to a half and half portion for the next two days. Finally, you can increase consumption to about three quarters of holistic dog food and only a quarter of the earlier diet. During this time, you should observe how well your pet is adapting to his/her new diet. If there appear to be digestive problems like diarrhea or a loss of appetite, then you should discontinue using the dog food and consult your veterinarian about possible courses of treatment.

It is important to exercise caution while purchasing holistic dog food for your dog. Read the labels of dog food products carefully to ensure that they don’t contain any harmful ingredients or potential allergens. The best holistic dog food ideally contains plenty of natural, wholesome ingredients and no chemicals and artificial components. Holistic puppy food will generally contain natural products like fish meal, chicken meal, apples, carrots, spinach, celery and ground brown rice.
