Fish Oil for Dog

Fish oil is an excellent source of Omega – 3 fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) which are beneficial for the proper functioning of the brains, nervous system, organs and hormones.

In fact dogs with DHA incorporated into their diet are found to be more trainable and smarter than those on a regular diet.

Fish oil is also highly effective in maintaining a healthy dog coat and also preventing skin infections like seborrhea which causes the skin to become red and flaky. Fish oil in dogs is also used to maintain healthy cholesterol levels and prevent future joint problems. The easiest way to feed the dog fish oil is via easily available fish oil capsules. Before making any changes to a dog’s diet such as including fish oil in it, the veterinarian needs to be consulted. This is because in some dogs fish oil consumption results in the development of yellowish skin flakes and oily hair. Additionally dogs that are known to have bleeding disorders are also not supposed to have fish oil without prior approval from their veterinarian.
