Dog Temperament Test - Information on Temperament Test For Dogs

Those who adopt a dog are essentially adding a new member to their family.

A dog temperament test is done to examine how suitable a dog is for adoption. Such testing is usually done in dog shelters. A temperament test for dogs is done to make sure that a dog is able to fit in well with the new family. Temperament testing helps an owner to gain insights into the dog’s personality.

However, it must be kept in mind that the dog’s adult behavior will depend upon the treatment and training that he receives in his formative years.

A temperament test must be done only after the dog has adjusted to living in a shelter. Dogs that are shy and uncomfortable in the environment are not suitable for testing. Even dogs that have been abused may respond differently.

Hence it is advisable to test such dogs only after they are calmer and more comfortable. One can check to see how sociable a dog is by calling out to him and watching for his reaction. Notice if he comes up to you immediately and how he responds to being petted and hugged. You can also check for aggression by giving him a treat and then going up to him. Dogs that are aggressive about food will start growling and this can prove to be a serious problem later on. You also need to check how the dog responds to unknown objects. It’s normal for him to seem slightly startled initially. Healthy, well-adjusted dogs will show curiosity and will proceed to investigate the unknown object.

Barking or aggression of any sort is not a good sign. A dog’s temperament is also determined by how he reacts with other dogs. To test this, watch how he responds to another friendly dog. Aggressive dogs must not be kept along with other dogs. Also, examine his reaction to cats. Keep the cat at a safe distance away in a carrier and keep the dog on a leash. If the dog becomes aggressive, then he must not be placed along with other cats and animals. You can also examine him by picking up his feet or examining his ears and mouth. This will enable you to known if muzzling him is necessary during veterinary check-ups.

A dog temperament test is done by breed as different dog breeds have different traits and personalities. It is important to select a dog that suits you and your family.
