Ticks on Dogs

All pet owners abhor dog ticks and do their utmost to keep their dogs free of this problem, because not only are the tick bites on dogs a source of irritation, ticks also bring in a host of other diseases.

Ticks are large fleas which range from light to dark brown or gray. They have many legs and are often mistaken for spiders. They are ectoparasites, which means that they attach themselves externally on a host and suck its blood.

Ticks are usually found in grassy areas, fields, woods and forests, and sometimes even on wooden fences. When an animal is passing by, they attach themselves to its body. While they also attack humans and cats, ticks on dogs are a more common occurrence.

Even a normal walk in the woods may result in a tick infestation. Your dog can also pick up ticks from other dogs, especially strays.

Dangers of ticks: Ticks on dogs is a major concern for pet owners, because ticks can cause a host of diseases like tick fever, spotted fever, typhus, Lyme disease, Babesosis, Ehrlichiosis, tularemia or Texas cattle fever. Some of these diseases can even prove fatal for the dog.

Ticks on Dogs Prevention, Symptoms

Tick control for dogs is essential right from the beginning.

Proper grooming goes a long way in preventing ticks on dogs. Dogs that are cleaned and groomed regularly are less likely to have ticks on them. Even though ticks are very small, they can be seen by the trained eye, and pet owners can easily spot them. If you are fond of walking or hiking in the woods, where ticks are known to exist, it would be a good idea to groom your dog meticulously, or bathe it after you return home. Taking your pet regularly to a grooming center can also reduce the chances of ticks remaining on your dog.

Do not allow your pet to roam unattended or mix with strays or other dogs that are suspected to have ticks.

Symptoms:

A dog tick is a small creature and may be difficult to spot. Once it climbs on to your dog’s fur, it may hide itself in the folds of the ears, paws or armpits. You may realize that your dog is infected only when it begins to scratch itself continuously, or when sores begin to form on the skin.

Ticks on Dogs Treatment

There are many medicated soaps, shampoos and powders available in the market to destroy ticks. You may also try some herbal remedies. Tick collars also help to keep off ticks.
