Train Your Ferret:

Ferrets and weasels come from the same family of carnivorous animals that have only recently been used as pets.

For most part, these animals were used by man as part of a hunting strategy or as a method of protecting food stores from rodents. Considering that the animal as almost totally carnivorous, this arrangement worked out just fine as well.

Ferrets started to get used as pets in the sixties and seventies with most celebrities adopting these as exotics pets. As pets, ferrets are quite charming and endearing because they tend to be a hyperactive and playful lot with quite a few antics up their sleeves.

One of the more ridiculous acts that sometimes gets them injured is the war dance where they usually end up breaking things on their way down from a twirling jump or landing on their backs.

Training ferrets is a difficult but possible task. One of the first types of training that you need to do is ferret litter training. Ferret potty training can be a messy and cumbersome exercise because it might take a ferret sometime to get used to the idea of a litter box. Litter training ferrets starts with adding a litter box to the cage of the animal and also limiting the space that the ferret has to move in while in this enclosed space. A small amount of urine and feces already in the litter box would be of great help and a cue to the animal that this is the place to do its business. It is also useful to identify the specific signs of the ferret when it is about to go into a urination or defecation mode. At that time, it is advised that you pick up the animal and place it in its litter box. This activity will take some time for the ferret to pick up but eventually will work out fine.

Sometimes a ferret will just prefer a certain part of the house to its business in and sometimes it will be in the most inconvenient part of the house as well. It will therefore make sense to place the litter box right at this spot so that they animal forms an association between the two. It is very important that when the animal does use the litter box for what it is meant for, you reward the animal with a treat when it does.
