Dog Training Methods

Submitted by Michael Adams on February 25, 2010

There are many dog training methods that enable an owner to teach his dog new behaviors. Dogs serve various purposes such as guiding the blind, hunting, tracing, guarding, rescuing or herding. Most dogs are also just faithful companions to their owners and serve as loyal pets.

Different methods may be applied depending on the current behavior of the dog and the purpose of the training.

Whisper training is a relatively new method of training dogs. It enables the owner to gain a deeper understanding of his dog and also establishes a mode of communication which is vital in dog training.

Through whisper training, the dog’s body language is interpreted and understood. Once the owner is able to read his dog’s body language, he is able to gain full control of his pet. This allows for more efficient training. This method is quite modern and varies from most other methods and as such it has still not been adopted widely. However those who have used it have reported success. In clicker training, a clicking sound is generated when the dog obeys a command or demonstrates positive behavior. The clicker is a plastic box that has a metal strip inside which produces the clicking sound. In this method of training, the clicker is used when the dog obeys a command and must be rewarded. This is a very popular dog training method which teaches consistency to the dog.

The most effective form of dog training is reward training. Here a treat is given to the dog to reward him for positive behavior. The treat could range from a toy, a favorite snack or even a walk outdoors. Consistency is very important in this method and the dog must receive the treat immediately after the positive behavior so that a clear association is established between the two. Crate training is used to give the dog a sense of home and make his realize how a home must be kept clean.
The crate is usually a large box with a main door. The crate must have adequate space for the dog to move around and also play in. The dog is placed in the crate for about a couple of hours. Dogs do not defecate in the spot where they sleep, and this type of training takes advantage of this natural behavior
