Natural Pet Care

Submitted by Michael Adams on May 28, 2010

The idea of natural pet food as vital to natural pet care is increasing and becoming more popular amongst many pet owners; this is because natural foods are generally least processed and have close to no pesticides and preservatives in them. Providing your pet with a natural pet diet ensures that the food it gets is fresh, nutritious and healthy.

It is important that you always provide a fresh and clean supply of water, as it is a critical part for the well being of your pet.

Most animals can go for a few days without food, but not water. The food you give your pets should be fresh, organic and grown locally. All meats, chicken and eggs should be cooked but not over cooked as this will cause them to lose their nutrients.

All vegetables, even if organically grown, should be washed well. This ensures that the produce is clean and revitalized.

Always refrigerate the leftover food, but never feed it to the pet for more than two days. There are a lot of sites and books on pet health care that will give you a good idea about different food and their benefits. This knowledge will also help you plan your dog’s meal well. It is important to keep your pet's meal simple and fresh. The best way to monitor what your pet prefers to eat is to make it yourself. Before adopting a natural pet diet it is important to consult the veterinarian to understand the pet's nutritional requirements.

The following food should be a part of your pet's diet:

  • Eggs: Your pets’ diet should include eggs, as they help with muscle growth and also give your pet a glossy coat. It is a good source of protein and the egg shells are a good source of calcium.
  • Whole grains: Grains such as brown rice, whole wheat, and barley offer good sources of carbohydrates that provide energy. Adding these grains also ensures that the pet gets the required fiber intake, as well as essential vitamins and fatty acids.
  • Most dogs enjoy organ meats such as liver, kidney, heart and gizzard. Although liver has high nutritional value, do not give your pet too much as it can lead to diarrhea.
  • Vegetables such as carrots, peas & broccoli keep the immune system strong as they are a natural source of various essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, dietary fiber, as well as of antioxidants and phytonutrients.
  • Flaxseed and soybean oil give your dog a luscious coat and soft skin as they are a good source of Vitamin E and natural Omega-3 fatty acids.
