Allergies in Cats Causes and Symptoms

Submitted by Michael Adams on May 11, 2010

Fel d 1, a protein, is the most common cat allergen and is found in cat saliva, anal sebaceous glands, fur, and dander. Some of the other kinds of cat allergens that include albumin are present in the blood, saliva and urine.

Allergy to cats and cat skin allergies are quite common.

People are generally more prone to get allergies to cat dander than dog fur. Cats produce more allergens and this is especially true in male cats that haven’t been neutered. Cat dander is light and so it’s in the air, is sticky and can even be found in places where there are no cats.

Cat dander is found around homes. Cat dander can cause allergies because the dander particles are very small and when you breathe in, then these enter your lungs. This can cause allergic asthma, and people who own cats can be more prone to getting asthma symptoms.

Controlling cat allergies symptoms: If you are allergic to cats, then it is advisable to avoid cats. You may even like to take allergy medicines to control the symptoms. However, if you have a few cats at home, then the allergy may carry on. You may even like to take allergy shots if you are allergic to your pet cats. You can also reduce the chance of getting allergies by following some of the following tips:
  • Make sure that your cat is neutered.
  • You must bathe the cat twice a week.
  • Every day, wipe your cat with a wet towel.
  • Don’t let your cat stay in your bedroom. Keep your bedroom door closed.
  • Create a place for your cat in the garage or in a room where you do not have carpeting.
  • Clean your home frequently, and vacuum with a vacuum cleaner that has HEPA.
  • Buy a room air cleaner for your bedroom.
  • Follow tips to avoid house dust mites.
  • Cat dander will remain in the house even if the cat isn’t there anymore. Thus, it is important to clean your home thoroughly.
  • You need to steam clean all upholstered furniture and carpets.
  • Dry clean all your curtains and bedding regularly.
  • Sweep hard floors and also wipe surfaces and floors with antiseptic solutions.
  • You might want to replace heat vent filters and air conditioning filters.
Cat skin allergies treatment: Cat allergy happens when the immune system of the body reacts when you come in contact with cat dander. You can also talk to your doctor about cat allergy medicines.
