Preparing Homemade Dog Foods

Submitted by Michael Adams on April 19, 2010

There are many different types of dog food available in the market. However, if the truth be told, most of these dog foods are not suitable for the health of your dog. Though these commercially available foods are convenient to store and use, they are not always the healthiest choice for your dog.

In the long run it is always better to feed your dog homemade dog food so that the dog remains healthy.

Making homemade dog food is neither an expensive proposition, nor a difficult one. Your dog needs a high protein diet and if you add a good amount of fiber to it, you will make sure that your dog gets all the required nutrients.

A simple mix of vegetables, rice, and meat should do the trick. However you can keep changing the ingredients to make the food more palatable for the dog and increase variety in the meals.

Before you choose the kind of food you want to make for your dog, it is important to make sure that your dog is prepared to switch over to the new food. Homemade dog food is a much healthier alternative to store bought foods however, if you do not replace the commercial food slowly with the homemade food, there is a high likelihood that the dog will reject the new food.

Pet food recall, due to the non conformity with food standards, is something which is fast becoming common throughout the world. Homemade food is a great and healthy way to make sure that you avoid the trouble caused by such a recall. When you are making home foods, you can also create a custom diet for your dog, adding more of the nutrients that your vet thinks your dog should be getting. Home made food is also devoid of chemicals and preservatives, making it an excellent option for a healthy and balanced diet.

However, it is also true that preparing homemade food is time consuming and may turn out to be more expensive than store bought foods. You will also have to give more care and spend more time in making sure that the portions and the ingredients are monitored carefully.

Cooked meats, especially white meats, along with rice or other starches and cooked vegetables of all the different colors, make for excellent home meals. You can use raw meats if cooked meats are not available. However, it is important to consider the portions of each nutrient when you are making the food. A typical meal for a dog should contain 60% of proteins, 20% of carbohydrates, 10% of fiber and only 10% of fat.
