Dog Food Secrets

Submitted by Michael Adams on March 10, 2010

Dogs are one of the most loving and obedient of pets. They are known to be man’s best friend, and are often treated as family members. However, even after providing your pet with premium brand dog food and providing it with good medical care and living conditions, dogs rarely live for much more than a decade.

Issues such as renal failure, malnutrition, and digestive system diseases often lead to life-threatening conditions. While some of these conditions are unavoidable, good nutrition for dogs is one way of keeping them around for longer.

Dog food is perhaps one of the most important contributing factors in determining the health/wellbeing of a dog.

In fact, a nutritious, healthy dog diet is the secret to this. The current system of dog care can reduce your dog's life by over 8 to 10 years. This is because cheap, unhealthy, and less nutritious ingredients are used to make commercialized food for dogs. Many veterinarians have stated that most of the commercial dog foods available have inadequate proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. These commercialized dog food products are loaded with slaughterhouse waste, toxic materials, junk fillers, heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, additives, preservatives, and more worthless and potentially harmful ingredients.

Given the uncertainty of the food available in the market, it is best to provide your dog with all types of healthy and nutritious food. In fact, when it comes to dog food secrets, steering clear of economy brands of commercial dog food products is the best. Some of the foods that you can give your dog are as follows.

•    Most veterinarians prefer raw dog food. This is because raw food contains enzymes that are essential for digestion. These foods also stimulate the brain, providing cellular energy as well as repairing tissues, organs, and cells. Raw food includes meaty bones, pulped vegetables, and fruits. These can be mixed with raw organ meats (liver, heart, and kidneys), garlic, yogurt, raw eggs, and cod or ground flax seed meal, to make a wholesome raw food meal for your dog. Raw dog foods that can be prepared at home to ensure that the ingredients used are not toxic or stale.

•    Second to raw dog foods is natural/homemade dog foods. These are made of fresh and natural vegetables and meats. Natural foods are made at home, and you can use chicken, egg, fish, meat, organ meats, carrots, beans, cauliflower, and potatoes to make a stew or broth for your dog. Adding rice and whole wheat is also good.

•    While a majority of dog owners prefer to buy dry dog food for its convenience and ease of storage, it is not always the best option. Cheaper dry dog foods are made from soybean, corn or rice, while the premium brands are made with all-natural, human-grade ingredients. Nevertheless, one can never be certain of the foods available commercially. Consult your vet for advice on which is the best dry dog food for your dog.
